Between the 24th and 26th of October the 40th Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), titled “Mission possible. The Renaissance of Liberalism.”  was held in the Greek capital, Athens. The event brought together around 1000 delegates from across Europe who held in-depth discussions on topics of major importance for Europe’s future, including environmental protection, Europe’s role on the global stage and the rule of law.

MRF youth members Antoaneta Asenova and Tanser Yuseinov were delegates to the congress as part of the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) delegation after being elected for this at the organization’s Spring Congress. Antoaneta Asenova, a member of the Bureau of the European Liberal Youth, was also the leader of the delegation.

The aim of the Congress was the election of a new leadership of the ALDE Party, consisting of a president and six vice presidents, the adoption of new member organisations, discussing and voting on resolutions, etc. Mr Hans van Baal was re-elected as ALDE President, and the president of Youth MRF and MEP Mr Ilhan Kyuchyuk was re-elected as Vice President of the ALDE party for a third consecutive term with the highest number of votes in the race with a total of 9 candidates running.

The youth delegation was extremely active during the discussions, the resolutions process and the election of leadership, with young liberals meeting with all candidates, hearing and discussing their views on the development of the organization and liberalism in Europe. Both resolutions proposed and many amendments made by the youth delegation to other resolutions related to climate change, digitalisation, the rule of law, EU enlargement to the Western Balkans and others were adopted.

Prime ministers, commissioners, MEPs and other politicians from the liberal political family also took part in the congress.
